Q2 - Why is it being introduced? |

The aims of the Driver CPC are to:

Recognise and accredit the knowledge and skills required for professional bus, coach and lorry drivers

Ensure drivers continually update their skills and knowledge.

Raise the status of bus, coach and lorry drivers to promote driving as a career.

Driver CPC is short for ‘Driver Certificate of Professional Competence’ it is a new qualification that all professional bus, coach and lorry drivers will need to have if they want to drive for a living. The Driver CPC is and EU requirement. The Driving Standards Agency (DSA) is responsible for implementing it in Great Britain and is working with transport industry representatives to ensure it is introduced successfully. |

If you are already a bus, coach, HGV lorry driver or drive any vehicle over 3.5 tonnes, you will need to start preparing yourself to take regular ‘periodic training’
If you are company owner or transport manager with professional drivers of vehicles over 3.5 tonnes ‘periodic training’ is a sensible option for you and your business. It is mandatory that 35hrs of training has to be completed by each driver by September 10th 2014 to achieve the Driver CPC qualification. By breaking the training down into blocks of 7hrs and spreading them over the next four years the cost to the company can be minimised. Recent DSA figures suggest that 3 million training hours are required to cover all current PSV and LGV licence holders, By leaving DCPC training to the last minute you may be in danger of:

Not finding a training centre to cover your requirements.

Loss of revenue through vehicles stood idle if training requirements are not met.

Loss of revenue through drivers attending one week (35hrs) of training. (Drivers salary, Vehicle stood down, Agency drivers etc...)

Not as much as you may think. Drivers CPC is made up of many modules that can be tailored to suit your training needs. Each module is either 3½ or 7hrs in length. However, whatever modules are taken a minimum of 7hrs contact time is required for the hours to be registered with the DSA.

Course dates can be flexible to suit your needs, minimizing vehicle downtime and the financial impact to your business.
For larger companies with driving staff of 10 more a 'corporate' rate is offered and a considerable saving can be made, please contact me for further information on training costs.

It already has. The law came into effect for bus and coach drivers from 10th September 2008 and for HGV lorry drivers it was 10th September 2009. |

Q6 - Can i ignore Driver CPC & still drive professionally? |
|
|
The simple answer is ‘NO’. You cannot ignore Driver CPC. If you are a bus, coach, HGV or driver of a vehicle over 3.5 tonne and you are not covered any of the exemptions, you will need to take action soon. |

Q7 - So once I have my initial qualification, is that it?
|
|
|
No, a Driver CPC lasts for five years. To qualify for a further Driver CPC, you will need to complete another 35hrs of periodic training, if that end date passes without any such training, then you Driver CPC will expire, and you could face legal charges if you continue to drive in a professional capacity. |
